Butterfly

Butterfly valves consist of several parts including a circular body, a round disc metal or soft seats and a stuffing box. Operation of butterfly valve is similar to ball valve. It only required a quarter-turn rotation (90°) of the handle to regulate, open or shut the valve. Larger butterfly valves are fitted with gearbox or actuator to assist the operation of the valve.

Butterfly valves can also be open or close gradually to throttle flow. Butterfly valves are especially suitable for large flow of liquids or low pressure gases. Butterfly valves have many advantages in large valve application over ball, gate and globe valve. It saves on space and weight. Butterfly valve’s maintenance cost is low because it has less moving parts.

In general, there are three types of butterfly valves: Concentric, Double Offset and Triple Offset Butterfly Valves. Each design has its benefit and functions for different pressure and flow rate.
